Misconceptions?

Dear Author has brought up another really good question disguised as a post. I love it when it she does that.

My take is that yes when you mention e-publishing, people are misinformed, or ignorant that there is anything other than erotic available. Case in point, as stated in her post, several of the highest bestsellers from Samhain (this week) and All Romance Ebooks are multiple partner romances.

So why don't more people know there's non-erotic? Honestly, I have my opinions on this. Consumers go to sites that provide what they are shopping for (using myself as an example). You don't go to Target when you're looking for the latest polical news. I don't freqent Amber Quill, or Ellora's Cave, two favorites among many readers.

The average ratio of (specialized with either a division or a non-erotic theme) publishers is 1 to 6, non-erotic to erotic. (roughly)

There is also the argument that it's a consumer driven market, but that leads back to a lack of information to possible consumers. I can talk to five people at any given time and none will know about e-books. Does age factor into that? Yes. (Another post for another day) Also that it's just easier for women to buy their "porn" anonymously online, rather than over the counter.

This attitude I think also creates another problem because Romance isn't porn, but the insinuation is that all the romance online is.

Rather disheartening for those (Me) who don't write either Erotic or Romantic Porn.

ON THE RUN - Benefits St. Jude's

On January 21 The Wild Rose Press will release ON THE RUN, a romantic suspense novel that is a special project by the publisher to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital . TWRP has absorbed all the printing and production costs, the editor and cover designer have contributed their salaries and I am contributing all my royalties, so that every penny of sales can go to St. Jude's

St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility anywhere. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

Here is where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do more science, more quickly. Where doctors across the world send their toughest cases and most vulnerable patients. Where no one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and those without insurance are never asked to pay. They've built America's 3rd-largest health-care charity, with a model that keeps the costs down and the funds flowing, so the science never stops.

All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay.

Please join me in supporting this very worthwhile cause, and pass the word along to friends and relatives. Buy link is www.thewildrosepress.

Here's a little taste of the book:

When Robin Fletcher saw her sister brutally murdered by her wealthy, abusive husband, she followed her instinct and grabbed her five-year-old nephew, determined to protect him at all costs. Months later they are living in Memphis, with new names and a new life, when their sense of security is shattered. Andy is diagnosed with aplastic anemia and in a malevolent twist of fate, the killer has discovered where Robin, now Laura, is living. Can the doctor with whom she is rapidly falling in love protect her against the vicious man determined t kill her as he did her sister, or will she once again have to go ON THE RUN?

Taking the highway into Oregon might have been easier on her, but she was sure that was the first route C.D. would check. Instead, she cut east immediately into Idaho. Besides, evading C.D., she had a specific reason for coming this way. Tomorrow they’d get to Helena, where she had important business to take care of. Things that would help keep her and Bobby safe.

Robin had only a vague idea of how long they’d been driving but it felt as if she’d been doing it forever. Her eyes were gritty from lack of sleep and her muscles rigid with tension. It didn’t help that she was constantly watching for some ca to run her off the road or but her off.

She’d been lucky enough to find a couple of drive-through’s where she fueled up with coffee. Caffeine raced through her system like a wild horse, revving her up and making her edgy.

She slid a glance at Bobby, wrapped in a blanket and buckled into his car seat. What a lucky thing he was sleeping so heavily. Still, she knew they needed to find a bed pretty soon. And food. Starvation wouldn’t be a pretty way to die.

By the time they reached Kellogg, Idaho, she was more than ready to stop. She pulled gratefully into a motel whose sign blinked ‘Vacancy’ in big red letters. It was the most welcoming site Robin had seen in a long time.

Nervously she left Bobby in the car while she registered, keeping one eye on the parking lot, terrified that any moment she’d hear the screeching of brakes and C.D. would leap out of his car. At last they were in their room at the back of the motel, well hidden from the street. She toted in her duffel bag and laptop, then tucked the little boy into bed.

After that she treated herself to a shower. Tired as she was, she still needed to wash away the strain of driving nearly three hundred miles at night. All she wanted was to wash the fatigue from her muscles before she climbed into bed. But as the hot spray beat down on her physically and emotionally exhausted body, her control disintegrated and tears began to cascade down her cheeks. She was thankful that the drumming of the water against the tiles drowned out the huge gulping sobs that wracked her body, so Bobby couldn’t hear.

She cried as she had never cried before in her life, tears of despair and grief. And self-condemnation, that she hadn’t been able to do anything to save her sister. She didn’t think that particular guilt would ever leave her.

Jamie! Oh, Jamie! How did I let this happen to you?

The water ran cold before the last shudder died from her body. She drew in a long breath and blew it out slowly. Her heart ached unbearably, but she had a responsibility now. A mission, and she would not fail, no matter what. Keep Bobby safe and away from C.D. Create a whole new life for the two of them. This would be her tribute to her sister.

Sneezing...

I bet it's allergies. Like that's a hard one to figure out, but the weird thing is when it hits. Tonight it was almost 7 on the button. Last night, about half an hour before bed and it's just insane! Sneezing for no apparent reason, and a LOT!

I don't usually allergies, but I do have Cedar Fever. If I have allergies because of the pollen, then everyone else is just miserable. So, if I'm sneezing, what's everyone else doing? Other than living in misery?

I'm bored....

Which really just equates to ...

I'm addicted.

I'm not writing, although right now with the TV going and a Gamecube just down the hall.... So I surf... And Surf... And read... And find stuff... And surf... But is any of it useful? Oh heck no! LOL

I did write some this morning, but it's not enough. Just a few pages worth. I seem to have less and less attention span for writing.

How do you guys cope with all the distractions? Internet, family, RL? (I will say that when I'm home alone, I work better so I have to acknowledge that I just don't work well when everyone's at home.)

Wicked Nights by Tawny Taylor

If you could be kidnapped by the man of your dreams...who would it be?

Tawny Taylor's latest release, WICKED NIGHTS, the second book in her Passion Unbound series, answers that question for one lucky freelance writer. (Changeling Press, Jan. 17, 2008)

The blurb:

If you could be kidnapped by any man, who would it be?

And thus it was from the beginning of time. Two knights. One bride. They whispered their story to The Chosen, a human endowed with the gift of Hearing... The Chosen wrote the story and released it into the human world.

The bait was set. The spell was cast. And then they waited...(An excerpt from the
Ierd Kimeno, the sacred text of the Twelfth Knight Brotherhood)

Freelance writer Cheryl Witte loves her romance novels as much as the next girl. Her favorite -- Dangerous Knights, the story of two dominant, sexy vampires, Cy and Maksim. To be possessed by two dark and dangerous Masters? One word, yum! But that’s just fantasy. It could never happen in real life... right? She wouldn’t want it to.

Then again, maybe it could...and maybe she would.

Cheryl is onto the story of the century, about a portal that allows real men--dangerous and barbaric ones --to travel into the human world and kidnap unsuspecting women. You bet she’s willing to take her chances for that kind of story. A paper cut and a few muttered words could make all her wishes come true, including a cover story in the NY Times. Not to mention bring the men of her fantasies, Cy and Maksim, to life.

She sets up some cameras, arms herself with a tranquilizer, and waits. And waits…until…one minute she’s sleeping, the next she’s dragged into a world of her imagination, to face her darkest desires... and most shocking secrets.

Cy and Maksim have their own challenges to face. But nothing can stop them from
introducing their fiery new bride to the rapture of complete submission.

Releases today!

Crowning A Warrior King is out!!

Life has been calm and quiet for Aran for almost seven years since
moving into Banter. She is a prosperous business owner, has friends,
and helps those in need without question. Yet a delivery of a
mysterious jewel encrusted box changes all of that for her in an
instant.

Not only is the mysterious box enchanted, revealing someone knows of
her deepest secrets, it imprisons a man unlike any other. Bold,
fearsome, strong. A warrior from a place she's never heard of, a land
she's never known. And the most glaring fact to his arrival is she is
the only one with the knowledge to set him free, with a magic he
cannot trust.

Rordan must return to the kingdom of Eglandor to stop the wicked
sorceress who has imprisoned him, deliver the throne to King Tah-lel's
appointed heir, and fulfill his destiny with the woman from another
time, another world. And there's only so much time to do it all with
the King's health failing and an uprising from within only waiting for
the moment to claim the throne.

Help those in need

One of the things that has come out of the Cassie Edwards plagiarism charges, is the chance to help those who have no voice in the damages done to them.

The black-footed ferrets.

As researched by Paul Tolme' for Defenders of Wildlife magazine, these animals are only one of the many endangered animals under protection and in need of our help.

If you would like to help a worthy cause please see this post for details on how to contribute to a donation. Or see Defenders of Wildlife directly, as well as the Wildlife Adoption Center.

Thank you.

Another one?

Good grief! How many communities can one person belong to?

Apparently.. A lot

There's:
Myspace
Bebo
WAYN
Ning
Author's Den
LibraryThing....

Well yeah, you get the picture. Some serve a purpose, such as Author's Den or Gather. But I was invited to one yesterday that I've actually found useful. Let me stress, it's useful becuase it serves a purpose for me. No, I'm not dating (Myspace), and while I like the idea of "friends" (Bebo) I honestly spend enough time already online. I'm there, if at least in spirit.

So what's the deal about this one?
Two things: There's no limit or ceiling of quantity of books on your "shelf" and the second one is they have author pages, a promotional tool, where readers can find more about you and your writing. Um, what author wouldn't like being "found" by a new fan? Oh, and the best part? It's free!! No membership, no annual or lifetime or anything.

This really cool Author tool and readers playground?
Goodreads.com

It works much like many of them do, with rating and comments and review boxes, but I can put my entire library (or nearly once I get it straightened out) on the shelves there. I exceeded LibraryThing like four times over. And I have a database already, I'm not paying for an online one too.

So if I have one saved already, why do one online? That's easy. It's a back up. Anything happens to my personal collection, I have documented proof of what I own. If anything happens to my computer (KOW), I have the one online.

So that's my internet tip of the day. There's a ton of authors listed, and readers in every genre. Go and see who you haven't read, or share with those on the ones you have read. Discuss. It's actually a nice little hangout.

But when the colonization program is sabotaged, Jake is ordered to find the truth and Daniella is the primary suspect.

Tagged like the clearance rack at Christmas time.

In otherwords, A LOT!

Well, it's been a while. I was trying to stay under the radar! And I succeeded until a few days ago. So here it is:
The rules:
Link to the person who tagged you;
Leave a comment on their blog so that their readers can visit yours;
Post the rules on your blog;
Share 7 random and/or weird facts about yourself on your blog;
Tag 7 random people at the end of your post;
Include links to their blogs;
Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

And I have to say, I got tagged-ARE YOU COUNTING HERE?- by FOUR different people this time! Adelle Laudan, Emma Sanders, Toni Sue, and Lauren Murphy.

So my seven weird and/or random facts:
  1. I have a Mardi Gras feathered mask hanging on my office wall. It was a gift from Dad from one of his business trips.
  2. I love going to the Hungry Artists annual painting sale. I only wish I could afford to actually buy every year!
  3. I just finished cataloguing the majority of my fiction book collection. 760+ a few. That's a lot of authors!
  4. I think I'm becoming OCD with age.
  5. I don't like wearing my glasses to drive. I prefer my contacts. What? Did you think I'd drive blind?? LOL
  6. I spend way too much obsessing over stuff I have no control over (See #4).
  7. I absolutely detest brussel sprouts.

Okay so that's me. And here are my victims! Enjoy visiting them. Bwahahahaaa!

Dayna Hart, Maxwell the Pug, Dana Belfry , Denyse Bridger, Catherine Stang, Marianne Arkins, and Imogen Howsen

Thanks! Enjoy the insanity!

2008 starts with a bang

*holds microphone* *picture goofy rather surprised smile*

I... uh... Just sent back my first contract of 2008.

I sold HIS MASTER PLAN, to Whiskey Creek Press. It's a contemporary romance, one that I've tried to find a home for, for a very long time. And it's a huge relief for me.

Moral: When you have a good story, don't let the first R slow you down. This one was R'd by a couple, including Harlequin. I was afraid it wouldn't "quite" fit, but I have to try.

This is the basic blurb but it'll probably change:

Elizabeth Whitten has a few problems with men. She has learned from experience they are untrustworthy and unable to commit to just one woman. Her father was a prime example. Her just dumped boyfriend was another. She refuses to be taken for a ride any longer. Being alone is better than being used and cheated on.

When Dan Masters returns to Somerset, the memories of his flirtatious innuendoes at their first meeting and the interruption of his wife have already labeled him in Elizabeth's book. But Dan isn't quite ready to let her slip passed his radar. Life has taken a downhill turn for Dan, and when the last thing he was looking for winds up being the best thing he's ever found, he goes after Elizabeth with the tenacious personality that marked his career and makes him the man he is.

So there you have it. 2008. A whole new year of anxiety. 003.gif

I am back

Well, it's official. As of today, I'm back from vacation, and believe me, I feel it! I swear there is holiday jetlag and I have it!

I had to do the SRN newsletter, try to finagle some semblance of control out of a post that just wasn't going to work with me and I even managed to write some this evening. Not a lot, but some. Two days of writing. That's a record right at the moment. *snort*

I just received news that I have a new blog gig coming up in the near future. I'll pass the details as I get them.

I also have my release coming out soon. Yay! I likes releases days... It means I have to write more! Unfortunately, I don't have more written. That's the bummer. I need to get something finished for this year... I'll pass more on about that soon too. I know, I'm such a tease.

Nominated! Wooohoooooo!

I just found out this morning that I have two nominations in the RORR polls.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RoRRChatters/polls

Best Romance Author of 2007
and
Best Romance Book of 2007

You do have to join the group to vote, but you can mark it for no email if you don't want to receive posts.

I also have word that my video for Crowning a Warrior King has been listed for the New Covey Trailer Awards
http://thenewcoveytrailerawards.blogspot.com/
I am #9.
Voting will open either the last week of the month, or as soon as they have 30 videos. There is also their sister site,
http://thenewcoveycoverawards.blogspot.com/
for book covers. I submitted for the January listing, but it isn't posted yet.

Please go by these sites and vote! Even if you don't vote for me.
Thank you!

Edited to add:

THIS WAS JUST BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION:
Seems A Stroll in the Park is making a name for itself. It wasn't there earlier, so whoever nominated me, I owe you chocolate. :) I had no idea the story had the oomph to go so far.

I have also been nominated on the Preditors and Editors Romance Poll. The listing can be found here for the Best Romance Book of 2007, and here for the Best Author of 2007, but there are a lot of great names throughout the categories.

So please, take a minute and give your support to the authors, artists and publishing industry that we so love.

With many thank you's,
